Confidence In Front Of The Camera

Two Photoshoots, Two Versions Of Me

Confidence in midlife doesn’t appear overnight—it’s built through small, brave choices that stretch us beyond our comfort zone. For many women, especially in midlife, learning how to feel confident in your own skin can feel elusive in a youth-obsessed world. A few years ago, when I first launched Wear the Damn Boots, I decided to do something that felt both exciting and wildly uncomfortable: I booked an individual photoshoot.

At the time, it felt like a big deal—and not just because I had never done anything like it before. For the first time in a long while, the focus was on me. Not me as a wife, not me as a mother, not me as a teacher. Just me, standing in front of a camera, trying to take up space as a woman in midlife.

I remember how awkward it felt. I wasn’t sure what to do with my hands, how to stand, or whether I was doing any of it “right.” But when I saw the photos afterward, something shifted. I felt proud. Accomplished. Brave, even. That photoshoot became a quiet turning point—a moment where I realized confidence doesn’t arrive fully formed. It’s built by doing things that scare you.

The First Photoshoot: Stepping Outside My Comfort Zone

Fast forward to recently, when I did another photoshoot.

Same woman. Same age bracket. Same body.

Completely different experience.

This time, I walked in knowing who I was. I wasn’t trying to prove anything or perform a version of myself I thought looked confident. I felt confident. I trusted my instincts. I spoke up. I laughed more. I moved with ease. And the difference shows—in the photos, yes, but more importantly, in how I felt during the process.

That contrast is what made me pause and reflect.

Confidence Isn’t a Personality Trait—It’s a Practice

One of the biggest myths we’re sold is that confidence is something you either have or you don’t. But standing in front of that camera for the second time reminded me: confidence is built through repetition. Through experience. Through showing up again and again, even when it feels uncomfortable.

The first photoshoot gave me evidence that I could do hard things. The second photoshoot gave me permission to enjoy them.

Reclaiming Self-Expression in Midlife

Midlife has a way of slowly pulling us away from ourselves. Responsibilities stack up. Roles multiply. And somewhere along the way, self-expression can start to feel optional—or indulgent.

Both photoshoots gave me space to reconnect with myself, but the second one felt deeper. More intentional. I wasn’t dressing for trends or approval. I was dressing for me.

Self-expression isn’t a one-time reclamation. It’s something we return to, refine, and redefine as we grow.

Body Confidence and Aging: Seeing Yourself Differently

What surprised me most was how differently I saw my body the second time around. Not because it had changed dramatically—but because I had.

Instead of focusing on what I wanted to hide or fix, I appreciated what my body has carried me through. The lines, the softness, the strength—it all felt earned. Familiar. Mine.

Confidence doesn’t always mean loving every part of your body. Sometimes it simply means making peace with it.

Why Building Confidence in Midlife Matters

This isn’t really about professional photos. It’s about what happens when we choose ourselves. When we say yes to experiences that stretch us. When we stop waiting to feel “ready” and let readiness come from action.

The difference between those two photo shoots is the difference between hoping for confidence and building it.

If you’re standing on the edge of something that feels intimidating—whether it’s booking a photoshoot, wearing the outfit you’ve been saving, starting the project you keep postponing—this is your reminder:

You don’t have to feel confident to begin.

Begin, and confidence will follow.

Because confidence, like style and self-trust, is something we grow into—one brave choice at a time.

A Gentle Invitation

If this story resonates, consider this your permission slip. Wear the outfit. Book the shoot. Say yes to the experience that feels just a little bit scary. You don’t need to wait until you feel confident enough.

That’s how confidence is built—by wearing the damn boots before you’re sure you can walk in them.
