There’s something about September that feels like a fresh start. Maybe it’s the cooler mornings. The first hint of fall in the air. The return of routines after a summer that probably felt a little loose around the edges.
Or maybe it’s just the teacher in me. For as long as I can remember, September has felt more like a new year than January ever did. New notebook. New planner. New routines. A calendar that still has plenty of blank spaces.
For a long time, I thought a fresh start meant figuring out what I needed to fix. Get organized. Get back on track. Eat better. Exercise more. Clean out the closet. Get my shit together.
You know the drill.
But I’m thinking about it a little differently these days. Maybe a reset doesn’t have to mean becoming a more productive, organized, disciplined version of yourself. Maybe it can simply mean checking in.
What still feels good?
What doesn’t?
What am I carrying into this season that I don’t really want anymore?
And perhaps most importantly:
What do I want more of?
I’m Not Reinventing Myself
I don’t need a fall makeover. I’m not interested in becoming a completely different woman every time the calendar changes. I’ve spent enough years trying to improve myself into some imaginary version of who I thought I was supposed to be.
These days, I’m much more interested in being the woman I actually am.
Which means my fall refresh might look a little different.
It might mean cleaning out a closet—not because my clothes are wrong, but because some of them belong to a version of me I’m no longer interested in dressing.
It might mean getting my mornings back into a rhythm because I feel better when I have one.
It might mean clearing off the kitchen counter because, honestly, that pile has been making me crazy.
It might mean making plans for something I’m excited about instead of filling every open space on my calendar with things I should be doing.
And yes, it probably means pulling out the boots.
Because September is a pretty good excuse for that.
A Little Less “Should”
I’ve also been thinking about how many of our resets are built around the word should.
I should clean this. I should lose this. I should organize that. I should start doing this. I should stop doing that.
And suddenly what was supposed to feel like a fresh start feels like a very long list of things we’re failing at.
No thank you.
What if instead we asked:
What would make my life feel a little better this fall?
That’s a much more interesting question.
Maybe it’s a morning walk, getting together with friends more often, or saying yes to something you’ve been putting off.
There isn’t a right answer. That’s the point.
Your Life Doesn’t Need a Major Overhaul
I’ve become much more convinced that the best changes are often the ones that make your actual life feel better. That’s why I made the Fall Refresh checklist.
It’s not a list of everything you need to accomplish before fall officially gets underway. You don’t need another list like that. It’s simply a handful of small things to think about in four areas: home, closet, routines, and you.
Some are practical. Some are fun. And a few are meant to make you stop and think. Because a reset isn’t always about doing more; sometimes it’s about deciding what you can let go of.
So Here’s Your Fall Permission Slip
You don’t have to reinvent yourself this fall. You don’t have to suddenly become a morning person. You don’t have to clean your entire house. You don’t need a new wardrobe. You don’t need a five-step morning routine that starts at 5:00 a.m. And you definitely don’t need to become someone else’s version of your best self.
Ask yourself what would feel good right now.
Then start there.
Clear the space. Wear the outfit. Make the plan. Put the phone down. Try the thing.
Pull on the boots.
And step into the season as the woman you are—not the woman you think you should be.
Fall isn’t a reinvention.
It’s a reset.
And maybe the best part of a reset is realizing you don’t need to start over.
You just need to decide what comes with you.
