There are a lot of days I look forward to each year, but nothing compares to the magic of Small Business Saturday in my little town of Berlin, Maryland. Maybe it’s the way the air feels—crisp but energized—or maybe it’s the sense of community that settles over our charming streets like a warm blanket. Either way, this weekend kicks off the holiday season in the most beautiful way.
It All Begins With the Tree Lighting
Every year, Berlin gathers downtown on Friday night to officially welcome the holidays with our annual tree lighting. It’s one of those moments where everyone—families, neighbors, visitors, shop owners—comes together to celebrate the simple joy of being part of something special. The lights flicker on, the crowd cheers, and instantly the entire town seems to glow a little brighter. After the tree lighting, I head straight to Reverie Wine Bar for some live music and a glass of whatever Tara, the owner, recommends!
For me, that moment sets the tone for what comes next: a full day of supporting the people and businesses that make Berlin feel like home.
Why Small Business Saturday Means So Much
Small Business Saturday isn’t just a shopping day. It’s a chance to show up for the dreamers, the creators, the makers, and the shop owners who pour their hearts into every shelf, window display, and product. These are the people who know your name, remember your favorite scent or style, and always make you feel welcome.
Supporting small businesses is supporting the community—and in a town like ours, that matters.
First, A Quick Slip Into Ocean City
Because Small Business Saturday brings out the very best of our coastal communities, I’ll start my day in Ocean City for a special stop at Inner Bloom. They’re hosting a Small Business Saturday Market featuring over 25 incredible vendors — local artists, makers, farmers, crafters, vintage collectors, and more. It’s one of those events where you feel the creative energy the moment you walk in.
And since I’ll already be in OC…
I’ll probably make my way over to KCoast Surf Shop, too. It’s a staple, and there’s always something fun to discover — whether I’m shopping for someone else or just treating myself.
Now On To Berlin
I’ll spend the rest of Saturday strolling through town, bundled up and buzzing with excitement. And like any good day in Berlin, a few cherished stops are always part of the plan.
A Caffeine Kick at 2nd Wave Coffee & Social
After visiting the vendors’ market at Inner Bloom, I’ll need to fuel up with a coffee, and 2nd Wave Coffee & Social is my go-to. Whether it’s a seasonal latte or a classic cup, this spot always feels like the perfect start to the day. Warm drinks, friendly faces, and the buzz of locals gearing up for holiday shopping — it’s everything I love about Berlin in one cozy space.
Eastern Woodland Home
This shop feels like stepping into a cozy hug. From handcrafted décor to thoughtful gifts, it’s one of my favorite places for holiday shopping. Everything feels intentional, warm, and beautifully curated — the kind of gift shop where you instantly think of a friend with every item you pick up.
Blazer
If you’ve never stepped into Blazer, Small Business Saturday is the perfect time. It’s one of those shops full of personality—unique vintage pieces, great gifts, and that ideal something you didn’t even know you needed. Berlin wouldn’t be the same without stores like this.
Patty Jeans Boutique
Right after Blazer, I’ll be heading over to Patty Jeans Boutique — a specialty shop filled with festive fits, beautiful jewelry, and pieces that feel perfect for holiday gatherings. It’s one of those places where you can find something special for someone else… or a little something for yourself.
A Sip of Sparkling at The Atlantic Hotel
And after a bit of shopping, I love stopping by the charming Atlantic Hotel for a little bubbles break. This place radiates historic charm, and there’s something so festive about enjoying a glass of sparkling wine during the holiday season. It’s the perfect way to toast to community, creativity, and all the small businesses that make Berlin shine.
Join Me in Supporting Local This Weekend
If you’re local, I hope you’ll come out and soak up the magic. And if you’re not, consider exploring the small businesses near you. When we shop local, we’re not just buying things—we’re investing in people, stories, and the places that make our towns feel like home.
Here’s to community, connection, good coffee, a little sparkle, a trip to the beach, and the joy of supporting small.
Happy Small Business Saturday!
